Jade and Iron

Jade and Iron
Latin American Tales from Two Cultures
Translated by Hugh Hazelton
Edited by Patricia Aldana
Illustrated by Luis Garay
Douglas & McIntyre, 1996

Todays book, Jade and Iron is not very vintage. Purchased at a library sale, I was struck by the gorgeous artwork by Luis Garay. Garay's highly detailed illustrations for this book (done in pen and ink and watercolor), have rich colors and realistic portrayals. It all makes for a very engaging book.

Luis Garay, a native of Granada, has been referred to as the best young Latin American Illustrator working today. Having no formal art training,  that's pretty amazing. He is featured in Under the Spell of the Moon, a compilation book of the world's best children's book illustrators and has won international awards.
